The inspiration of car camping
Dee: In 2021, I was feeling disconnected from nature and yearning to get back out there, exploring new places and spending more time traveling. Due to financial constraints, I got creative and stumbled upon van life, which inspired me to create a mini camper in my Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Initially, I only had the bare basics—a couple of cheap foam camping mats, some blankets, sheets, and pillows from home, and a makeshift kitchen setup with a single burner stove. My first trip was to visit my daughter in college, over 10 hours away. The first night I slept in my SUV was magical, and I knew car camping was meant for me! Over the last 2 1/2 years, I've explored nature in 12 states and gradually added functional items to my setup.
Physical and Mental Changes
Dee: Before I started car camping, I was out of shape and unhappy. I was unhappy because I had lost my connection to nature. Two and a half years later, I am in better physical and mental shape. I have lost 17 pounds since the beginning of my car camping journey just by being able to be more active, going on hikes and exploring the outdoors. Peace falls upon me every time I take a car camping trip. It allows me the time to energize myself and recharge my internal batteries by having alone time with my thoughts and return to my family a happier person.
Most Significant Adventure
Dee:One adventure that left a lasting impression on me was our trip to Acadia National Park in Maine. My son and I hiked Cadillac Mountain and witnessed the breathtaking scenery where ocean waves crash into mountain shores. Hearing the thunderous sounds of waves hitting the rocks at Thunder Hole was an experience I'll never forget. It brought tears of joy and created lifelong memories for us.
Biggest Challenge
Dee: I know a lot of people think it will be so many challenges living outdoor. I just want to say, the biggest challenge I face during car camping is that every trip feels too short. I yearn for the days when I can camp for weeks or months at a time.
Choosing the Right Equipment
Dee:The journeys will always be fun—if you make sure to prepare for the fun. When selecting the right equipment, do your research, especially on power and solar setups. Ensure your portable power station meets the wattage/voltage needs of your appliances, whether it's for cooking, charging devices, or keeping food cold. For me, the BougeRV Colorful Fridge works perfectly with my 600-watt power station and 100-watt solar panel. Since it only draws about 36 watts while running, it keeps my food fresh for extended periods, allowing for longer trips without worrying about spoilage. When it comes time to upgrade, I'll definitely consider a higher-wattage power station.
"To all outdoor and car camping enthusiasts out there, just get out there and do it! Don't let money hold you back. Start with what you have and build your setup over time. Begin your adventures now, don't wait! Happy car camping and happy travels!" says Dee.
